About Panama Sound: How We Work, And Why It Works

Panama Sound is a recording studio in Richmond’s historic Annex neighborhood,

built for artists who want to make records in a calm, focused environment with someone who takes the music seriously.

I’m Logan — owner, engineer, and recordist. I built this studio around a simple idea: when people feel comfortable and supported, they make better music. Everything here is designed to remove friction, lower pressure, and keep the focus where it belongs — on the song.

This page isn’t about credentials or gear lists. It’s about how sessions feel, how decisions get made, and why artists consistently leave with work they’re proud of.

Who Panama Sound Is For

Panama Sound is for artists who:

  • Care about performances more than posturing
  • Want professional results without a high-pressure studio atmosphere
  • Value natural rooms and honest sound
  • Prefer collaboration over hierarchy

If you believe trust, comfort, and clarity matter as much as microphones and software, you’ll feel at home here.

How I Approach Recording

I come to recording as a musician first.

I’ve spent my life inside music — writing, performing, arranging, listening obsessively, and recording in all kinds of contexts. That perspective shapes every session. I’m not listening for technical perfection in isolation. I’m listening for the moment where a performance becomes undeniable.

Rather than following rigid studio formulas, I work responsively. Each song tells you what it needs if you’re paying attention. Sometimes that means precision and control. Sometimes it means leaving space for imperfection and surprise.

My job is to recognize those moments, protect them, and capture them clearly.

The Way We Work

Sessions at Panama Sound are structured, but never rushed.

I’ve designed the workflow to eliminate unnecessary decisions and distractions so artists can stay present. Technical processes run quietly in the background. You’re free to focus on playing, singing, experimenting, or resting when you need to.

You’ll get:

  • Clear direction when it’s helpful
  • Space when it’s not
  • Honest feedback without ego
  • A steady pace that keeps momentum without pressure

The goal isn’t endless takes or theoretical perfection. The goal is results that feel finished and true to you.

Studio Philosophy

The studio is guided by a few simple principles:

  • Space matters. Silence, room tone, and restraint are part of the music.
  • Subtlety beats excess. Good decisions age better than flashy ones.
  • Imperfection is information. Some of the best moments happen just before things get “right.”
  • Refinement is ongoing. Every session teaches something that improves the next.

These ideas shape how the space is set up, how sessions flow, and how decisions are made in real time.

The Studio Space

Panama Sound operates out of a quiet 1940s home originally built for WWII shipyard workers. It’s peaceful, lived-in, and unpretentious.

The main recording area connects a living room and dining room with vaulted ceilings that create a warm, open sound. Additional rooms allow for isolation when needed, making the space flexible enough for solo artists, small ensembles, and full bands.

Artists often comment on how quickly they settle in. That’s by design.

Tools, Not Distractions

The equipment here is chosen to support performances, not draw attention to itself.

Everything is deeply familiar, well-maintained, and selected to solve real recording problems efficiently. You won’t be overwhelmed with options, and nothing exists just to impress. When the tools disappear, performances come forward.

If you’re curious, you can explore the studio and tools in more detail on the Studio Tour — but it’s never required knowledge to make great work here.

The Bottom Line

What most artists notice first at Panama Sound isn’t the gear — it’s the calm.

My role is to create an environment where you can focus, take risks, and commit to performances without second-guessing yourself. When that happens, the technical side takes care of itself.

If that sounds like the way you want to work, I’d be glad to hear what you’re making.
